With gusts of almost similar rates (9 i / s on the Nikon D3s and 10 i / s on the Canon 1D Mark IV), and for the full autofocus less complex (51 AF points on the D3s and 45 points on the EOS 1D Mark IV), a sensitivity range up to record 102 400 ISO, 100% viewfinders, the differences seem to play on the size and definition of the sensor and, more anecdotally, the video format.
On top of the Canon 1D Mark IV, the changes are minimal. The FEL button near the trigger and already on the Mark III cannow start recording video.
Sensor
Some will probably be a little surprised, the Canon 1D Mark IVremains in effect, a "small" CMOS APS-H (27.9 x 18.6 mm, slightly smaller than the CMOS sensor of the Mark III ) and thus a factor of 1.3 x optical for EF. No full frame, therefore, the manufacturer preferring a small sensor to "extend" the optics, a choice fully justified by the guidelines of the case: the sports reporters and animal images. They may prefer to carry optical lighter and "long", a single EF 300mm f / 4 is transformed into a nearly 400 mm (390 mm to be precise). In addition, the sensor sees its definition seriously increase over its little brother, since the Mark IV has a CMOS 16-megapixel compared to "only 10 Mpix" the Mark III, an increase of almost 60% . Not bad. Especially since the burst rate at 10 frames / s with auto focus is still on the agenda of 121 Jpeg or Raw 28 14 bits. For this, the new SLR uses two processors DIGIC IV that can handle 8 channels drive the CMOS sensor (4 channels per processor).

Who says new sensor also said new treatment of electronic noise. On this point, the Canon 1D Mark IV than makes up for the delay to match the record for the Nikon D3s with a sensitivity peak of 102 400 ISO: not jealous. The gain is substantial, but it should put this number in context. Indeed, the range of typical use of the Mark IV is 50 to 2 or ISO 12800 is more than its predecessor (3200). In extended mode, the difference is more than so: 4 IL (ISO 102 400 ISO 6400 against only for the Mark III). Of course, it will check the quality of images in the modes H1, H2 and H3 and for now the case that we could take over was not final (can not post images made with so ...) . We must therefore expect the first tests to get an idea of the performance of reflex, because with a definition on a 16 Mpix APS-C sensor, the size of photosites is smaller: 5.7 microns aside against 7.2 microns on the previous model. The difference is not trivial.

Canon is obviously in contrast to prior CMOS design to explain the gain in sensitivity. The network of micro-lens is optimized and there is almost no space between the lenses. The architecture is also different with a manufacturing process that reduces the space between the photodiodes and thus maintain good sensitivity. To reflect the outcome of the Canon EOS 7D for the management of electronic noise, we are more impatient to push the Mark IV into a corner.

Autofocus
Of course, all eyes will canonists also include the autofocus system of the Canon 1DMark IV which posed so many problems on the previous model, while Nikon offers the most complete system of the moment.
Canon seems to have taken the measure of the delay and propose a new AF module with no fewer than 45 points including 39 cross (the Mark III does suggest that 19) operating at f / 2.8.

The arrangement of the collimators is interesting, since the sensor accuracy at f / 2.8 are well distributed over the surface focusing in particular on the periphery. Greater coverage of the target would probably be more pleasant, but do not spoil our fun and look forward to this new module, which has its own processor data processing for more responsiveness to the test field and during the burst at 10 frames / s. You will find in the new Canon 1D Mark IV AI Servo mode II (already present in the 7D). It should perform better on follow-up of subjects with more flexibility in changing direction, or hindrance during follow-up. In addition, the AF spot should also be more accurate by using a portion of the sensor (an area smaller than the representation of the collimator in the viewfinder). An operating mode that can be found already on the Canon 7D.
Very interesting, too, the sensitivity range of the autofocus module is wider: -1 EV to +18 EV (-1 / +19 for Nikon D3s and 1 / 19 IL for the Mark III).

As on the 7D, when you have selected a zone-center, if we switch the device from portrait to landscape or vice versa, change the selected area to stay the same side. More significant still.
Video
The video is of course a new component of SLR and Canon did not do things by halves, and offers video in 1080p 25 f / s or 24 f / s (to fit into a more cinematic) and even has a 720p at 50 i / s. No stereo microphone on the case, this will require still use an external microphone. There is still no cons for headphone output to check the input level of the sound. In addition, the recording format is also. MOV with H.264 compression (max duration 30 min. Or 4 GB).
The menus of the Canon 1D Mark IV is not really different from the previous model. Extent, viewfinder screen, casing, transmitter. On the remaining features, the EOS 1D Mark IV is wiser. The LCD is much more accurate because it remains the same size of 7.6 cm (3 inches), it now shows 920,000 points VGA images (640 x 480 pixels). The designs on display and view images that are no longer comfortable. The Canon 1D Review retains the dual-slot CF / SD that some may not find relevant as it forces them to juggle different card formats. This feature seems to prevail, Nikon D3s offering the same system.
At the housing, regardless of changes and the robustness is always appreciated: the chassis is magnesium and the Mark IV has 76 joints to protect against dust and moisture.

With the release of the 1D Mark IV, Canon offers a new WiFi transmitter, the WFT-E2 II, which allows another to synchronize the onset of multiple enclosures. The price of the new transmitter is not yet reported.
Inevitably, the Canon 1D Mark IV will be faced with brand new Nikon D3s. If certain technical specifications are quite similar (burst, auto focus, ISO, raw 14-bit LCD 920 000 points, 100% viewfinder nice, rugged housing and all-weather, anti-dust system ...), differences are played on sensor size and definition of images.
If Nikon has opted for full-size, Canon has preferred to keep a smaller sensor in APS-H size (27.9 x18, 6 mm) which has a multiplier of 1.3 x probably a little more suited for sports photos or animal in which the focal length is still predominant. With a resolution of 16 MP, the Canon 1D Mark IV is also more flexible to make a crop or make a double page, even though in principle, 12 Mpix is enough. Nikon will fit as accurately. The autofocus system of the Mark IV is too new to have the first returns, but it will be hard to deal with the sophisticated and powerful module (3D-tracking) of the Nikon D3s.
There remains the question of the ISO. In this area, the sensor size could make the difference photodiodes Nikon's measuring almost 8.5 microns 5.2 microns cons of the Canon. We must therefore consider the field. This promises beautiful face to face.

I bought the Canon 1D Mark IV, a few weeks ago and am well pleased. The camera can shoot that are not otherwise possible. I.e. you can get great photos even when you otherwise only with flash hinbekommt what useful . The ISO availability is a dream. Likewise, the auto focus first class. This camera is worth every euro . Every time again . For the past nine months, I have the Canon 1D Review as a supplement to the 5D Mk II , the image quality a bit better at the 5 . That was then but even with the "criticism" . ;-) To my surprise, the 1 Series can be operated easily and intuitively . Thus, the stopped it after a short time, a feeling of familiarity. The feel , accuracy and image quality makes this even more fun. So I have overcome the pain of the big investment faster than expected. :-) Especially in combination with telephoto lenses and the current moving object passes the camera on top form and proves to be a picture machine par excellence. It like the continuous shooting speed of 10fps, and an accurate and fast AF system. The 16MP resolution had been sufficient for cropping.

The Canon 5D is a great case. Beautiful building , beautiful sight, intuitive menu , good image quality in high ISO up to 3200, amazing video mode . With the 24-105 f4 Is you a box pro with reasonable weight , coupled with a 70-200 F4 IS, you have a saccoche you can take without constraint by any weight or size and image quality with impeccable . Brief but happiness for the enthusiast but also for the professional. Now it's greedy battery , minimum two batteries if you will not spend the day. The Canon 5D is a great device , easy to use , high sensitivity, not too heavy, camera with lens 24-105 mm F / 4 IS USM for a high quality of the shot in the studio and more.
